Motherboards of 2007

Overclockers Club has posted an article of the motherboards of 2007. On the AMD side not much has happened sadly. The Asus CrossHair still rules the roost.

The systems seem quite similar in performance for integer calculations, apart from the Asus Crosshair, which has the disadvantage of being run with an X2 4200+ against X2 6000+ CPUs in the other AM2 boards. To its credit though, you can see the performance difference is scaled to tally with the AMD CPU performance rating (i.e. the processor name). For floating point calculations, it's obvious to see which three motherboards have the X2 6000+, and we see the same scaled performance of the X2 4200+. What's most interesting here, however, is that the E6600 in the ECS G33T-M2 falls behind the X2 6000+; something I would never have guessed.

CrossFire/SLI Comparison

Hardware Secrets has posted all the specifications and operating modes for SLI and Crossfire. There is not a huge difference between the two, but read the full article if you would like to learn the specifics of each technology.

With the recent release of CrossFireX by AMD/ATI and 3-way SLI by nVidia we think it is a good time to make a technical comparison between all incarnations of these two technologies, which have the same goal: to allow video cards to be connected in parallel in order to increase gaming performance.

Forecasting 2008: AMD Apologist Analyst Day

AMD held its annual Financial Analyst Day this morning. This time around, there was no glitter, no flash, and no rosy pep talks about the current (or future) dominance of AMD products in the marketplace. The various corporate executives who spoke, including Hector Ruiz (CEO), Mario Rivas (executive vice president, Computing Products Group), and Dirk Meyer (president, chief operating officer), acknowledged the difficulties AMD is currently experiencing, admitted that the company's execution had slipped badly over 2007, and pledged that 2008 would be different. AMD's word of the day was "apologize," and multiple executives expounded on the theme. Future-casting was kept to a bare minimum, and most of the information discussed is already common knowledge in technical circles.

AMD RS780 integrated graphics chipset due in January

The 7-series chipset lineup from AMD already includes high-end and mid-range variants. According to a report by DigiTimes, those will soon be joined by mainstream and value offerings with integrated graphics. The report quotes unnamed sources at motherboard manufacturers as saying AMD plans to roll out RS780 and RS740 chipsets some time next month.

DigiTimes relates little information about the RS740. However, it does say the RS780 will include HyperTransport 3.0 and PCI Express 2.0 support as well as a DirectX 10 graphics processor with H.264 video decoding capability and a choice of DisplayPort, HDMI, and DVI display outputs. DigiTimes also claims that a new Hybrid CrossFire X technology in the RS780 will allow users to couple the integrated graphics processor with discrete GPUs for enhanced graphics performance.
